"If you're a fan of Key & Peele... then you'll likely enjoy the humor in this film."

Two friends attempt to rescue a kitten named Keanu from a street gang known as the "Blips."

Keanu follows Rell (Jordan Peele) and Clarence (Keegan-Michael Key). After a break-up, Rell is visited by an innocent kitten – who happens to belong to a gang leader, unbeknownst to him. He adopts the kitten and becomes happier. Unfortunately for him, the kitten is stolen by a gang known as the Blips. So, Rell and Clarence masquerade as stone cold killers known as "Tectonic" and "Shark Tank," respectively, in order to win the gang's trust. This, of course, leads to plenty of hijinks. It's a simple but effective plot that kept my interest from beginning to end. The ending was great, too.

There isn't much more to say about Keanu. I suppose I feel this way about most comedies - I think it's the most subjective genre. This is your standard action-comedy, which isn't a bad or good thing. It works, right? If you're a fan of Key & Peele, which was a great show, then you'll likely enjoy the humor in this film. It's very similar. As a matter of fact, it occasionally recycles a few jokes, especially early on in the film. Most of it is original material, though. You know, the film reminded me of 21 Jump Street and its sequel. It follows a very familiar formula. To recap: if you're a fan of Key & Peele, you'll more than likely enjoy this.

Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key perform very well together. The pair are charismatic and funny. They're in their zone, which is great. Method Man is great as Cheddar, too. All-around, the acting is fine. The music, original and otherwise, is great. The film was written by Jordan Peele and Alex Rubens, and directed by Peter Atencio. Although the writing doesn't stray far from the 'winning' formula, I thought the film was well written. Most of the humor landed for me. Atencio's direction, action and otherwise, is also great. He crafts a very well-paced and exciting comedy.

Overall, Keanu is a very fun film. If you like action-comedies like 21 Jump Street or shows like Key & Peele, I think you'll enjoy this film. It might not be perfect, some jokes might fall flat, but I thorougly enjoyed it. Well worth the rental for me.

Score: 7/10
