" even does some things better than the original."

A murderer stalks camp counselors at a camp near Camp Crystal Lake...

Friday the 13th Part 2 is more of the same. The film takes place five years after the events of Friday the 13th. Fresh counselors are arriving at a training camp. They bicker and have fun. While most of the counselors hit the bar for one last night in town, a select few stay at the camp. These counselors are picked off by a masked killer. Like the original, this film leads to a cat-and-mouse climax. I liked this ending a bit more, though.

Ultimately, Friday the 13th Part 2 is the same film as the last -- well, at least it uses the very same formula. The characters are the same, the setting is practically the same, the buildup is the same, the climax is the same, and so on. At least the antagonist is different and more prevalent. The death sequences are also ramped up. There's a bit more suspense, as well. I thought the climax was executed a little better this time around. I suppose more of the same is not so bad a second time. (spoiler: although the later films become more comical, they're more of the same, too! Read my reviews!) The one aspect I didn't enjoy was the flashback introduction, which recaps the first film - I hate when they do that.

The acting is what you'd expect from an 80s slasher. Some robotic delivery, some stilted and cheesy dialogue -- at least it's not terrible. I liked the music in the film. It's shot well, too. The gory kills mostly consists of slit throats, but the makeup and special effects were great. I'm a sucker for practical special effects, though. Although the introduction is wasteful and most of the film is a rehash, director Steve Miner produces a more efficient and more suspenseful slasher than its predecessor.

Overall, Friday the 13th Part 2 is a very good film. Aside from a few slight changes, it's a rehash of the original. Fortunately, it's still exciting, suspenseful, and bloody. In fact, it even does some things better than the original. If you're tired of slashers, this might not be for you. But, if it's been a while, this might be an enjoyable treat.

Score: 7/10
Parental Guide: Strong violence and gore, full nudity and some sex.
